Having decided to go with solid wood flooring, l have another conundrum, what type of finish is bets. Having looked at whats available, i'm seeing Oil finished for £60 -£70 per sq m andLacquered from £30 + per sq m. Now l have about 30 sq m to do, so the cost difference is fairly huge, but l do not wanna regret what l put down.

Whats the difference between Lacquered and Oil finished solid wood flooring

The lacquered finish is probabaly a 'two pack' lacquer. This means that it is very dificult to refinish, If it gets scratched. The lacqure was applied by a industrial spray system or a 'curtain coater'. If the floor is going to get well looked after it will be fine however if u have dogs or children with bikes, toy cars or anything that wil damage the surface , then the oil finish is best because u can lightly sand out the scratch & recoat with oil. You dont need any special tools.

Lacquer tends to crack with movement of the wood where oil finished is far more supple. You do have to keep oiling the oil finished wood but do you want to replace the lacquered wood especially if you get water or damp behind the lacquer. You get what you pay for.

Whats the difference between Lacquered and Oil finished solid wood flooring

Sounds like you're in the UK. Here is the US, vendors take great liberties in what they call things.

Oiled could be a drying oil such as linseed oil or it could be any oil-based finish, e.g., a varnish. Here, there are myriad products called ''oil-[something or other]'' that do not have oil in them. ''Tung Oil Finish'' is the biggest lie in the world, none of them have any tung oil in them. There is tung oil; none of them are this.

Whats the difference between Lacquered and Oil finished solid wood flooring

''laquered'' is varnished with a wear resistant material,
''oil finished'' is treated with an oil e.g. teak oil.
The laquered is probably the easiest to maintain, but in my opinion the oiled timber has a much more natural finish but
does require re-treating from time to time.
Also check out the thickness of the boards, sometimes the
laquered is much thinner.
